Ian approached Preston Pools to design and build a substantial indoor pool within a new contemporary extension to his Gosforth home. The brief called for a serious 20-metre lapping pool with a grand entrance, a tiled spa, and a steam room — paired with a genuinely distinctive feature: an underwater viewing window connecting the pool to the adjacent cinema room.
The pool needed to read as a single grand space while serving two quite different functions — a 10m square family pool with shallow and deep ends, and a serious 20m lapping channel cutting through the centre. The underwater viewing window into the cinema room added significant structural and waterproofing complexity, and the contemporary extension needed to tie back into the existing stone house.
We specified a level-deck pool finished in light, neutral stone tile to echo the existing stone walls of the original house. A circular 2.5m tiled spa, a raised cobra-head fountain and Roman-end steps were grouped to form a grand pool entrance. The underwater viewing window was engineered into the deep section, opening directly into the cinema room beyond.
The finished pool hall is unusually atmospheric — a 20m lapping channel running through a generous square pool, lit by LED, with the underwater window framing swimmers from the cinema room. A glass-fronted steam room sits at the far end, clad in natural stone and lit with starry-sky LEDs. The contemporary extension reads as a natural continuation of the original house.
