Outdoor &
Infinity Pools.
Designed to Command
the Landscape.
An outdoor pool changes the entire character of a property. It draws the eye, extends the living space, and creates a destination within your own grounds. When designed with care and built with precision, it becomes inseparable from the landscape as though it has always been there.
Preston Pools designs and constructs bespoke outdoor and infinity pools for private residences across Cheshire, Lancashire, Merseyside, Cumbria, and the North of England. Every installation is shaped by the contours of the land, the architecture of the property, and the way you intend to use the space.
Every outdoor or infinity pool begins below ground, not above it. Foundations are engineered to suit the specific ground conditions of the site, from stable bedrock to sloping or made-up ground that requires piling or reinforced retaining structures. A fully tanked concrete shell, waterproofed with a bonded membrane system, forms the structural envelope, while stainless steel or mosaic tile finishes are applied over a screed base to the precise falls needed for drainage and edge detailing. For infinity-edge designs specifically, the vanishing edge is formed by a weir wall set fractionally below the main pool's waterline, with water spilling continuously into a catch basin below before being returned via the filtration circuit; getting the level of that weir wall right, to within a few millimetres across its full length, is what determines whether the finished edge reads as a seamless sheet of water or an uneven one.
The cost of an outdoor or infinity pool is shaped less by its size than by what surrounds it. Ground conditions and excavation, the complexity of the edge detail — a true infinity edge demands a balance tank and hydraulic engineering that a conventional skimmer pool does not — the choice of finish, and the specification of heating and covers all influence the investment more than surface area alone. Access, terracing, and the surrounding landscaping carry weight too. We set out every element in a detailed, itemised proposal from the first consultation, and our FAQ answers the questions we are asked most about swimming pool costs.
Our recent outdoor commissions show the breadth of this work: an 11-metre pool set within the secluded West Cheshire countryside at Willington Rise, Tarporley; an award-winning 20-metre pool and spa overlooking the Menai Strait on the Isle of Anglesey; and a 10-metre pool composed around a garden summer-house and spa at Hamilton Lodge, Knutsford.
Design Options
For anyone comparing infinity pool UK options, the edge itself is only the starting point — how it is finished and framed matters just as much. Beyond the weir wall's hydraulic edge, we detail infinity and skimmer pools alike in stainless steel or mosaic tile, glass mosaic in iridescent or tonal finishes, large-format porcelain, or natural stone such as limestone and travertine, each chosen for underwater performance as much as appearance — the full range is set out on our features page. Surrounds are considered with the same care: basalt stone coping, timber-effect composite decking, and large-format tile with contrasting stone step treads have all featured across our outdoor commissions, chosen to suit the property rather than a house style. Covers are part of the design brief from the outset — concealed automatic safety covers running on rail systems, low enough in profile to disappear when retracted, protect the water and retain heat, and on several projects were specified precisely so as not to interrupt a view or a garden line. The Installation Process
As outdoor swimming pool builders, we treat a pool in a garden as a single construction project, not a hole with water in it. Our six-stage process, set out in full on our process page, begins with a site assessment reading ground conditions, access, and drainage before a design is drawn, followed by engineering that produces the structural, hydraulic, and filtration specification for that plot. Construction is managed in-house by our own project managers and specialist trades rather than subcontractors, which matters most in a garden setting, where excavation, retaining structures, and landscaping must be sequenced around existing trees, boundaries, and access routes. The shell, plant room, and surrounding hard landscaping are typically built out together, so decking, coping, and planting integrate with the pool rather than being retrofitted around it once the water is in. Commissioning follows — water treatment balancing, system calibration, and a handover with guidance on operating the pool — after which our aftercare team remains available for as long as you own it.Materials, Costs & Upkeep
Beyond the factors already at play in pricing a pool — ground conditions, edge detail, and finish — the technology specified inside the plant room adds to the investment and shapes the maintenance a pool needs afterwards. We advocate the Dryden Aqua SPACE system for the outdoor pools we build, which handles chemical dosing, backwash cycles, and water-level top-up automatically, in place of manual testing and dosing. Treating a garden and swimming pool as one long-term commitment rather than two separate concerns, we provide full documentation and operating guidance at handover, and our aftercare team remains available afterwards — many clients return years later for a refurbishment rather than a replacement, whether that is a retile, a plant room upgrade, or a full modernisation of filtration and heating. Bespoke finishes, from natural stone to glass mosaic, are chosen in part for how they perform after years of UK weather, not only for how they look on completion.
Engineering the Illusion.
An infinity edge pool is one of the most visually dramatic features a property can possess the water appearing to spill seamlessly into the horizon. But the effect that looks effortless requires meticulous engineering. The balance tank, the water level calibration, the structural gradient, and the overflow system must all be designed to exacting tolerances.
Our engineering team has delivered infinity pools across a variety of terrains and elevations. We understand the hydraulic and structural demands that make the difference between an infinity edge that performs beautifully and one that merely looks the part.

Resilient
by Design.
Outdoor pools in the North of England must contend with a climate that many contractors underestimate. Freeze-thaw cycles, ground movement, and exposure to the elements all influence material selection, construction methodology, and the specification of heating and cover systems. We engineer every outdoor installation for year-round resilience — from frost-resistant finishes and insulated shell construction to energy-efficient heating systems that make the pool usable well beyond the summer months.
Freeze-Thaw Resistance
Frost-resistant finishes and insulated shell construction engineered for the freeze-thaw cycles of the North of England.
Year-Round Heating
Energy-efficient heating systems and thermal cover specification that extend usable months well beyond a British summer.
Ground Movement
Construction methodology and material selection chosen to absorb ground movement and weather exposure over decades.

A Natural
Extension.
The most successful outdoor pools feel like a natural extension of the property’s grounds. We work with your landscape architect or garden designer to ensure that the pool, its surrounds, and the wider garden design are considered as one composition.
Bespoke coping, integrated planters, water features, and carefully specified materials ensure a seamless transition between built form and natural landscape.
