Paula approached Preston Pools to design and build a substantial outdoor swimming pool and spa at her home on the Isle of Anglesey, overlooking the Menai Strait. The brief called for a generous lap-length pool that would sit comfortably within an exposed coastal setting — finished in natural stone, with uninterrupted views to the water beyond.
A 20m outdoor pool on the Anglesey coast is exposed to weather, salt air and significant heat loss. The pool also needed robust water treatment, dependable heating with backup, and a safety cover capable of supporting weight when the pool was not in use. Any railing or hardware around the pool risked interrupting the sea views the project was designed around.
We specified a 20m × 5m pool graduating from 1.15m to 2.9m depth, finished in large-format tile with contrasting stone step treads. A primary heat exchanger is paired with a backup unit, with ozone and UV filtration providing layered water treatment. A concealed Aquatrac safety cover protects the pool, and bespoke poolside railing was designed to preserve the scenic outlook.
The finished pool is a coastal retreat that earned a Bronze SPATA Award on completion. Natural stone surrounds tie the installation into the landscape, and a matching tiled skimmer spa with its own heat exchanger extends use into cooler weather. The Aquatrac cover keeps the pool clean, conserves heat and provides safety, while the bespoke railing preserves the Menai Strait views.
