Following the closure of the City of Preston School in Ribbleton, a £5.7 million investment converted it into a state-of-the-art SEN school for the pupils of Sir Tom Finney Community School. Alongside classrooms, a sports hall and a fitness suite, the brief called for a hydrotherapy pool with full disabled access.
An institutional SEN hydrotherapy pool must deliver dignified, independent access for pupils with a wide range of physical and sensory needs, while meeting the safety and operational standards of a school facility. Sensory provision, ventilation and water purification all had to be specified to suit daily use by vulnerable pupils.
We installed an 8m × 6m level-deck hydrotherapy pool with grab-rails around the perimeter and a long step entry for easy, confident access. An airpad brings the pool to life, DMX-controlled colour-change lighting provides sensory therapy, a UV system purifies the water, and an air-sock ventilation system serves the room.
The finished hydrotherapy pool gives Sir Tom Finney's pupils a safe, accessible and sensory-rich space within their new £5.7m school. The DMX-controlled lighting supports sensory therapy, the automatic slatted cover provides heat retention and safety, and bespoke handrails and a long step entry ensure dignified access for every user.
