The Story

From Vision to Reality.

01 · The Brief

The Brief

Peter approached Preston Pools to design and build an indoor swimming pool for daily fitness use at his Lake District home. The brief was specific: a compact pool paired with a powerful counter-current swimjet, so he could swim continuously without needing the footprint of a full-length lap pool — set within a modern building that retained a traditional, natural-materials feel.

02 · The Challenge

The Challenge

Delivering serious daily fitness use within a compact 4m pool footprint meant the counter-current swimjet had to be specified and positioned precisely — strong enough for sustained swimming, smooth enough to make the pool feel like open water. Maximising natural light without losing the warmth of a traditional finish also took careful detailing, particularly across the long elevation facing the garden.

03 · Our Approach

Our Approach

We specified a 4m × 2.5m level-deck pool, graduating from 1.5m to 1.9m depth, with a counter-current swimjet positioned for continuous swimming and dual-use water massage. Slate-effect tile runs from the pool floor to the ceiling, framing two bespoke water features designed to Peter's specification. A limestone surround and three bi-fold doors along the pool's length flood the room with daylight.

04 · The Result

The Result

The finished pool won a Gold SPATA Award on completion — the highest accolade in UK pool construction. Peter swims daily against the counter-current jet and uses the same unit as a water massager to break down muscle tension. The slate feature wall, limestone surround and bespoke water features give a modern building a quietly traditional character that sits comfortably within its Lake District setting.
