Julie's family approached Preston Pools to design and build a residential pool with therapeutic benefit at the heart of the brief. They wanted a warm, calm, accessible space the whole family could share — therapeutic in function, but never clinical in feel. The pool needed to support daily use while remaining a beautiful, restful room within the home.
Hydrotherapy use places additional demands on a residential pool — warmer water than a standard swimming pool, consistent temperature control, and a layout that prioritises gentle access and confident movement in the water. The brief was to meet all of those requirements without the pool reading as a clinical facility, while keeping the running cost and ongoing maintenance manageable for daily family use.
We specified a 7.8m × 4.5m × 1.3m level-deck overflow pool — the shallow consistent depth supports comfortable standing exercises and confident movement. A counter-current swimjet provides adjustable resistance for therapy and fitness. A 1m waterblade adds a calming sensory feature, and an automatic slatted pool cover conserves heat between uses and protects water quality when the pool is not in use.
The finished pool delivers therapeutic benefit and family enjoyment in equal measure. A 2m square skimmer spa sits alongside the main pool for warm-water relaxation, and the overall room reads as a calm, considered space rather than a clinical facility. The family use the pool daily, and the cover keeps running costs and maintenance manageable across the year.
