Cheshire has been a natural home for Preston Pools’ work for well over a decade. From the sandstone villages around Tarporley to the wooded lanes of Alderley Edge, we have designed and built swimming pools for homeowners across the county who wanted something built properly, built to last, and built around the way they actually intend to live. As swimming pool builders Cheshire has come to trust for this kind of long-view, high-specification work, we thought it worth pausing to look back at some of the projects that best represent it.
What follows is a tour through ten of our Cheshire commissions — indoor pool halls, basement conversions and outdoor installations — grouped by area. Each one began with the same starting point described in our process: a conversation, a site visit, and a design built around the client’s brief rather than a standard template. The results, we think, speak for themselves.
Tarporley and Knutsford: Outdoor Pools for the Cheshire Countryside
Two of our outdoor projects sit either side of rural Cheshire, both built to work through more than just the height of summer.
At Willington Rise in Tarporley, Richard’s brief called for a generous skimmer pool on a secluded West Cheshire site, used regularly by young children. We built an 11m × 5m pool graduating from 1.2m to 1.8m, finished in light-coloured tile with a basalt stone top edge and wood-effect Millboard surrounds, protected by a bespoke automatic safety cover running on concealed rails. A separate garden annex with an enclosed bar and a covered, log-fired dining area extends the property’s outdoor season well past summer. The nine-month build sits quietly in its landscape, exactly as the brief intended.
At Hamilton Lodge in Knutsford, Gary wanted a family-friendly outdoor pool built around an existing garden summer-house. We installed a 10m × 4m patterned-liner pool with removable rail steps and a concealed automatic cover for heat retention through cooler months, and fitted the summer-house itself with a blue mosaic-tiled spa, a steam room and a fully concealed plant room — turning the whole corner of the garden into a self-contained outdoor wellness suite.
Northwich: Two Very Different Indoor Pool Halls
Northwich has given us two of our most distinctive indoor commissions, each built around a very different idea of relaxation.
Rod’s Pool is a 10m × 5m level-deck pool finished in natural stone and lit to wash the room in a warm golden glow — a build that took 24 months and went on to win a Silver SPATA Award. Its raised spa houses a high-pressure water cannon for genuine therapeutic relief, alongside a recessed waterfall over quartz split-face stone and a glass-fronted steam room, the whole space controlled via iPad.
Janet’s Pool, by contrast, is built for gentle exercise as much as relaxation: a 9m × 4.2m level-deck pool with a discreet top-edge slot system, a counter-current swim jet, tiled loungers and a glass-walled bar area, plus a 2.2m bespoke corner spa with massage jets built into the backrests.
Prestbury and Wilmslow: Light and Drama
Two projects in this pairing show how differently an indoor pool can be conceived even within a few miles of each other.
Gerry’s Pool in Prestbury was designed around daylight: a 10m × 5m pool finished in pearlescent blue tile, positioned beneath two large roof windows and a six-metre run of bi-fold doors so that reflected light carries through to the adjoining gym and dining room. An in-wall waterfall over split-face stone and an ozone water purification system round out a build that earned a Bronze SPATA Award.
Venika’s Pool in Wilmslow takes the opposite approach — a basement pool with genuine theatre. The 10m × 5.3m level-deck pool sits beneath a glass ceiling with a grand piano visible overhead, framed by a 3D feature wall with a recessed waterfall and water-blade fountain, and finished with a bespoke circular basalt-stone spa whose automatic cover was manufactured specifically to wrap around its curve.
Alderley Edge: Two Statement Pool Halls
Alderley Edge has been the setting for two of our largest and most ambitious indoor builds.
Mark’s Pool is a 14m × 4.5m level-deck pool at a constant 1.2m depth, finished in our Gin Fizz tile with a waterblade set through a glass copper tile feature wall — a room the client’s brief described simply as “pure excellence,” and one that famously shares its space with a Lamborghini Aventador in its own glass display case.
The Limes, built for Chris and Jane, is an 11.4m × 5.5m pool hall conceived as a hotel-quality wellness suite — pool, raised spa, sauna and steam room, with a one-metre water-blade fountain set into a split-face stone wall and a raised spa deliberately oriented towards a poolside television, where the couple watch their beloved Manchester City.
Mobberley and Frodsham: Pool Halls Built to Disappear Into Their Setting
Our final pairing shows two very different approaches to the same idea: a pool hall that reads as part of the property, not an addition to it.
Brendan’s Pool in Mobberley called for understated opulence — a 10m × 5m indoor pool finished in polished, split-face and textured natural stone with shimmering lava tiles, centred on an oversized bespoke cobra-head fountain, and built in close coordination with the client’s own contractors to integrate alternative-energy solutions into the system.
Mark & Wendy’s Pool in Frodsham fitted a stone-clad outbuilding designed to blend into the surrounding countryside with a 10m × 4.5m pool, a metallic-steel feature wall, a ceiling-mounted blade fountain and three-panel sliding doors on two elevations — giving the couple an indoor pool that opens fully to the garden whenever the weather allows.
Why Cheshire Homeowners Choose Preston Pools
Every one of these projects was different — different sites, different briefs, different ideas of what a pool should feel like. What connects them is a consistent approach to swimming pool construction Cheshire clients have come to rely on: a proper site visit before anything is designed, close coordination with a client’s own architects and contractors where needed, and a build specification that holds up over decades rather than years. Several of the projects above are now well over ten years old and still performing exactly as intended, which is, in the end, the real test of a pool builder’s work.
It is also worth noting how varied the brief can be within a single county. Cheshire’s Tarporley clients wanted a pool that vanished into open countryside; the Alderley Edge and Prestbury clients wanted rooms built to impress and entertain; Northwich and Mobberley called for spaces built around therapy and quiet relaxation.
